Latex Care
-
If you are new to buying and wearing latex/rubber clothing, the information below should help you care for your garments. Please be aware that latex/ rubber is a natural product; over time, it can degenerate. However, following these simple care and storage instructions, it is possible to get many years of enjoyment.
-
When your garment arrives it will appear matt and have a talc covering. This is a very thin protective layer from the supplier that prevents latex damage.
-
You may choose to have your garment matt, but if you want it shiny, use a silicone polish or spray. Silicone polish is easy to use, helps to feed the latex, and is best applied with a lint-free cloth. It is better to polish your garment flat.
-
When you wear your garment for the first time - and though it comes lightly talced on the inside - you may wish to use more talc. Alternatively, a latex-friendly aid/lube will help you slide into the garment especially if it's tight or there’s no zip. A little applied to the skin and inside the garment will make all the difference.
-
Be careful when dressing with jewellery and long nails as the latex can tear. Pale latex can also discolour so avoid contact with make-up, fake tan or jewellery if possible.
-
Some of our clothing has metal fastenings like zips and press studs. Black latex will not stain or be discoloured by these. If your garment is coloured latex, then it is best to keep metal components wrapped in tissue paper when not worn, especially after polishing when storing. Pale latex can discolour quickly when in contact with metal after polishing.
-
To launder your latex, use a mild detergent with lukewarm water in a basin, sink or bath. Move the garment around so that the water moves in and around the garment, and remove any stains with your fingertips. Rinse in clean lukewarm water. You may wish to repeat this to remove any remaining soap.
Leave your garment to drip-dry in the shower or over a bath for long enough to ensure it’s thoroughly dry inside and out. Make sure to manually dry any metal zips or studs. You can then talc the inside and polish the outside to keep the latex moisturised.
-
Latex can discolour in sunlight and melt due to heat. It is best to hang your garments inside a clothing/ suit bag within a wardrobe/ closet to prevent creasing and to prevent residual light from discolouring your garments.
